Academy Update | U18 & U23

Club Admin29 Jan - 07:48

The young Pewits go from strength to strength as both sides top their respective leagues.

Emley AFC’s Academy compromises two teams; the u18 and u23s. The 2024/25 season has been an incredible success for both sides so far, with both teams dominating their respective leagues.

The U18s sit three points clear at the top of their Junior Premier League division, despite having played a game less than second-placed North Ferriby U17/18s, and two less than Bottesford U18s in third. They have won six of their seven matches, with one draw completing their unbeaten record. Their goal difference of 27 is 11 better than anyone else in the league, and the 35 goals they have scored is 10 higher than the next highest scorers.

The u23 side are looking equally dominant in Centralised Division One. They have played nine matches, more than anyone else, and they are also unbeaten, with eight wins and a draw. Their goal difference sits at 45, 40 ahead of anyone else in the league, and with 25 points they are 13 clear of Tadcaster Albion / Askham Byran U23s in second place.

The Pewits U23s swept aside their nearest competitors in their most recent match, with a sound 3-0 win. Other highlights in the season include 9-0 and 5-0 wins against Just Football and Ossett United respectively, along with an 8-0 victory over Harrogate Railway and 5-0 wins against both Tadcaster / Askham Byron and Just Football earlier in the season.

Academy Manager Steve Stennett said “Both the U18s and U23s sit top of their respective leagues. Both teams play a very offensive 4-2-3-1 formation and they’ve both scored the most goals in their leagues.

“The secret to our success is no individual is bigger than the collective. We have some extremely talented players who have all bought into hard work. As good as they are with the ball, they are even better out of possession. We have a good number of the U18s that also play in the U23s, so the progression has been there for a lot of the players.”

Stennett also recognised the pathway being created for Academy players to get experience in the first team, with a number of youngsters featuring in the early rounds of the County Cup this season.

“We’ve had five players play for the first team in the Sheffield and Hallamshire Senior County Cup, with three players being called up for every round so far.”

Jack Barker-White, Toby Stennett, Jackson Durham, Oliver Hicks and Eben Sutton have all impressed in the first team this season.

Defender Barker-White especially has seen plenty of game time and looked assured in starts against Dinnington Town and Wombwell Main.

U18s will play at home, at Emley on Friday 31 January (7.30pm KO). Free entry for all, gates open at 6.30pm.
