Emley notched up a second successive home win in the Northern Premier League-Premier Division by beating bottom side Bamber Bridge in an accomplished performance in a game that was rearranged due to the original game being abandoned at half time due to fog.
It was far from Emley's best performance of the season, but it was far better than the previous 45 minutes against the same opponents, a dismal showing saw Emley 3-0 down when the referee decided the weather had beaten us, it was enough to beat the league's bottom side though, who were never completely out of it and kept going until the end.
It was an even first half with not many clear cut chances, both sides had sights at goal in the opening minutes however, Lewis Gould shooting wide for the Pewits and then a good Bamber Bridge attack stopped by Niall Heaton before a Hayden Lindley shot was gathered by the Brig keeper at the second attempt.
Emley were finding joy down our right with Sheppeard involved heavily but the final ball in wasn't the best and it didn't trouble the visitors, 20 minutes in and neat approach play by Emley ended up with a rasping shot from O'Connor outside the area but it flashed past the upright before Heaton again was immense in his defensive duties twice in a matter of minutes as the visitors looked to get on top.
The game was even for the first half an hour, Bamber Bridge saw their first effort fly over the bar onto the roof, and minutes later, their second effort followed the same trajectory, another effort just before half time saw Emley keeper Bottomley called into action for the first time but he managed to gather the shot at the second attempt to keep the scores level at half time.
H/T- Emley 0-0 Bamber Bridge.
Anyone who hadn't taken their place for the start of the second half will have no doubt missed Emley's first goal which came around 20 seconds into the half, from the kick off, the ball was worked to the right and then moved into the area, it was then shifted left to Aaron Haswell who fired hard and low past the keepers' left hand into the bottom corner for the lead.
There was a chance for an equaliser for Brig but the substitute blazed over from close range and Emley looked to double their lead not long after as Sheppeard found himself taking possession at the edge of the area but waited too long to decide whether to shoot himself or lay off to De Girolamo but the defence ended up clearing.
De Girolamo was involved again in the next attack, a ball over the top was left by Gould who was offside but Diego chased it down and forced the keeper to come out, it fell to Johnson who was fouled at the edge of the area, the free kick was taken too quick and caught everyone out, but Emley kept the attack going and eventually De Girolamo saw his well placed shot well saved by the keeper for a corner, which then saw a goalmouth scramble go the way of the Brig keeper.
Emley were now well on top and playing some neat football, Gould was a thorn in their side all night and he almost conjured up a chance for Johnson but lacked the power and precision to find his captain. Another young loanee, Luke Matykiewicz also impressed and he was involved in Emley's second, and ultimately winning goal, his desire to get to a loose ball paid off and he forced the keeper to bring him down with a clueless and needless challenge, Emley weren't complaining though and neither was Gabby Johnson as he sent the keeper the wrong way with a coolly taken spot kick.
The Pewits now had a fairly comfortable lead and made changes, De Girolamo giving way to Danny Devine as the visitors spurned a couple of good chances at the Warburton end and then fired a deep free kick too deep and over the bar. More changes for Emley, Johnson, Gould and O'Connor left the field and Stephenson, Clegg and Kiwomya came on.
Another Bamber Bridge free kick looked to cause a problem but thankfully Bottomley was able to set himself up to deal with the danger, he was then clattered by a sturdy challenge as he and the Brig attacker both went for a loose ball, thankfully he made a full recovery and was able to see the game out.
Another home win, another clean sheet at home is pleasing and we welcome Whitby Town to the Fantastic Media Welfare Ground on Saturday looking to make it 3 out of 3 in the league at home.
