Debutant striker Sam Agar hit four goals to take Emley to the top of the NWCFL Division One North with a 4-2 win over Daisy Hill.

Replacing Emley’s leading scorer Rob Bordman, who missed out after collecting five cautions, Agar opened his account after 9 minutes.

After a warning shot moments earlier that went narrowly wide, Agar had it laid on a plate by Jack Knight with an unselfish cross that was drilled home from about six yards out.

The pair had opportunities to double the lead. Both had shots that were blazed over the bar and one was chalked off for off-side before a Declan Dawson cross was inches away from Agar and Knights toes.

As ever, Emley paid the price for missed chances as the visitors had two corners in quick succession. The second was recycled out to Jacob Ridings who whipped in a cross. It evaded everyone and bounced into the net for the equaliser.

Scores were level at half time but not for long, seconds after the restart a clumsy challenge presented Daisy Hill with a nailed on penalty which was duly converted by Jake O’Brien.

The pendulum swung back towards Emley as Jimmy Eyles made a return from injury and immediately started to cause the defence problems. Some co-ordinating harrying by Eyles and midfielder Alex Metcalfe led to a corner and defender Jack Steers made a clean connection but his header was well saved.

The chance seemed to wake Emley up and the final 20 minutes became almost one way traffic. Dawson and Metcalfe were the suppliers of Agar’s equaliser with a fast move down the right, cross into the box that the striker finished well.

Two minutes later, Tom Rose was through on goal but the defender gave him a good old push in the back. The result was a penalty and, as the referee adjudged there was no attempt to play the ball, a red card as well for the offender Jean Khasa.

Agar’s penalty conversion put the Pewits back in charge.

Daisy Hill looked stunned by the quick-fire come back. Emley went into game management mode but still had the wherewithal to put the game out of sight. Five minutes were left on the clock and another foray down the right presented to ball to Agar who duly dispatched his and Emley’s fourth to make the three points safe.

Although Emley now top the table, it’s a fuzzy picture with almost all teams behind them having as many as 4 games in hand.
