Steeton mauled as Emley take the spoils at the home of the Cougars

Emley maintain their slim lead at the top of the North West Counties Division 1 North table after a comfortable 5-0 thrashing of bottom club Steeton in Keighley, in which top marksman Rob Bordman bagged another double.
With other teams having games in hand and still a long way to go, it's good to have the points on the board at this stage as the season draws into it's winter months.
Despite an overcast and damp day and a heavy pitch at cougar park, the Pewits, took a while to get going but when they did they were pretty clinical, albeit helped by some errors from the home side.
The game certainly wasn't one for the purists, and was a bit of a battle of wits in the first 10-15 minutes, but it was the home side who had the first real chance of note, a ball in wasn't dealt with and Gumboh tried a superb bicycle kick which George Clarke saved well.
But it wasn't long until Emley had taken a foothold in the game, one that they were never to relinquish, a long clearance downfield is chased down by Eyles, the keeper clears but only to the advancing Tom Rose who calmly slotted the ball into a gaping net from outside the area.
Steeton came back and a good passage of play saw a header go just wide, then Eyles shot wide for the visitors just a minute or so later.
Rob Bordman had been causing a few problems as usual and the next couple of minutes would belong to him, first, after another great run into the area from Rose, he was sent tumbling and the referee awarded a penalty, one in which Steeton didn't agree with, But Bordman stepped up and there was no doubt where the ball was going, smashed straight down the middle for a 2-0 lead, a minute later after a fine bit of boot trickery, Bordman found room for a shot, which the keeper managed to save, he again found room for another shot, but again, the keeper was equal to it as the half time whistle sounded.
H/T 0-2
As the pitch got heavier and the dark gloomier, it was important that Emley kept their concentration and not get complacent as has been the case in the past, the second half started a little fractious with both benches and players showing their frustrations, and the referee finally lost his patience with Steeton's Stein, who was offered the chance to warm the bench for 10 minutes with a sin bin.
Emley then took advantage of their numerical superiority, after another foul was committed outside the area, a free kick was awarded to Emley smack bang in Bordman territory, there was no doubting what was going to happen next, with the young ultras willing him on from the side, Bordman crashed a stunning, swerving shot that beat the keeper all ends up for a 3-0 lead that surely would see Emley remain as league leaders?
Bordman wasn't done, and was hunting a hat trick, but after a cheeky nod up,he slammed it on it's way down but it smashes against the bar, again, the keeper was clutching air, but his bar was still trembling.
Emley then sealed the game with a 4th goal, a ball in from the right was headed goalwards by Jack Steers and Alex Metcalfe got a final touch on the line as the keeper was beaten for a 4thtime and that was just about job done and game over.
After that, Emley settled down and did some of the game management stuff, calmly snuffing out any threat the home side threatened, Clarke, a virtual bystander in the Emley nets, watching as a shot sailed well over his bar, and with the return of Stein from the bin, they must have thought they had a chance of getting back into the game, Emley stood strong at the back
Steeton, to their credit though, kept going, looking for a consolation at least, but it wasn't to be, and the job was even more harder on 73 minutes when Ngoe was shown a second yellow and then a red just to make their day even more miserable.
Bordman had a great chance for a hat trick after been put through on goal, but the keeper made a fine save with his legs to deny him
And with Emley seeing the game out well and Steeton trying to see the game out, Emley well and truly wrapped things up, a harmless looking backpass was miskicked by the keeper straight to Finn Donovan who calmly slotted the ball past him into the bottom corner, to the delight of the ultras and the big Emley following in Steeton's biggest crowd of the season to date, Callum Charlton then had a shot saved as the final whistle approached.
It wasn't particularly pretty, but Emley manager Richard Tracey wasn't too concerned
"We are delighted with a very professional performance in difficult conditions, Steeton, to me are in a false position and I'm sure will pick up more points, overall a good for the supporters, players, committee and staff".
Emley are back on home soil next weekend when they face Daisy Hill in the PlayerMatch cup, Saturday 3pm.
