The first ever "Huddersfield derby" in the North West Counties Div 1 North takes place this Monday at the Fantastic Media Welfare Ground, when Emley host Golcar United 3.00pm
As well as being a local derby it also has an intriguing side story as the Golcar side contains a fair contingent of ex Emley players who will no doubt be keen to put one over on their old club!
It's a first season for both clubs in this division and the first ever season at this level for Golcar, who were promoted last year after winning the West Riding County Amateur League for the last 2 seasons, along with Shelley, these 2 clubs will contest 6 derby games between them, another West Yorkshire club, Steeton, based in Keighley make up the 4th Yorkshire side in this division.
Along with local bragging rights, there is also 3 important league points up for grabs, before a break for the FA Vase next weekend, so important to get some momentum going or keeping.
Golcar, have had a fairly decent start to their first step 6 adventure, winning their opening home game V Prestwich , losing 2-1 at Holker Old Boys, then thrashing Emley's opponents from Saturday, Garstang 5-1 before another 2-1 defeat, this time at Atherton LR on Tuesday.
One thing Emley could use to their advantage over Golcar is the previously mentioned ex players, Ben Burnett,Danny Stocker,Michael Tunnacliffe, Gregg Porter and Jordan Townend were all a major part of Emley's squads in the last couple of NCEL campaigns.
After Saturdays 2-0 win at Garstang, Emley joint manager Richard Tracey urged his team to be better
"Frustrating game following a good performance midweek. We started really well and delivered several dangerous balls and missed s few chances which allowed them to grow in confidence.
We then struggled to get any fluidity in our play and turned the ball over too often. I was pleased to get the initial goal but we need to improve to compete with Golcar on. Monday"
Come along and see who gets the upper hand!
