Emley earn point in exciting tussle

Emley and Ashton Town shared the spoils after an entertaining game in the rain in Wigan.
Despite much of the game played in torrential rain, both teams managed to play some good football at times and both will feel they did enough to warrant all 3 points, but in truth a winner either way would have been harsh.
Emley started off the better, playing downhill and into a mild breeze, but couldn't find an early breakthrough, Conor Glavin put an early header wide and Emley also forced a couple of early corners.
Then Jimmy Eyles had a great chance to open the scoring, after good link up play with Rob Bordman, but the Emley no.10 put his shot wide.
Then the home side picked up the pace and started to cause problems, and their first real chance saw the ball bounce off the crossbar, they were creating chances and had Emley on the back foot as the Pewits struggled to put any kind of possession together.
Ashton fired a warning sign with a close range header which was saved by George Clarke, but just 2 minutes later, the hosts had taken the lead, almost identical to the one before, a corner from the right and a close range header this time beat Clarke, who was then kept busy as Emley were really under the cosh.
Clarke would be called upon to make another good save, this time from a shot from just inside the area, and then along with the rest of the Emley contingent could only watch and breathe a sigh of relief as a shot hit the bar , then the follow up struck the post and then finally an Emley defender who cleared it.
Emley felt they should have had a penalty when Jimmy Eyles was brought down but the referee was having none of it and waved play on amid vociferous protests from the Emley players and supporters.
Ashton were just about good value for their half time lead as they had been the better side over the first 45 minutes.
H/T 1-0
The second half started in a torrential downpour which got worse as the minutes went by, but that didn't worry the Pewits, who came out all guns blazing looking for an equaliser as most of the crowd were looking for shelter.
The good travelling support wouldn't have long to wait to cheer though and it was a strange one, a corner was met by Conor Glavin, who skewed his header, but the keeper made a mess of it and it went in somehow, not that Emley were going to stand and work out why!
That goal put some spark into Emley's attack and for the next few minutes it was they who were on the front foot, Danny Farrar tried his luck but was just wide, then, Declan Dawson on a surge from left back fancied a crack, which flew over the bar, as did a cheeky chip over the keeper from Jimmy Eyles,
It was then somewhat against the run of play that Ashton regained the lead, and it was deja vu for Emley, another close range header, although George Clarke did well to save the initial header, but the rebound was turned in.
But Emley weren't about to lie down and they struck back just a couple of minutes later, a corner from Bordman caused havoc in the Ashton area and the ball was turned in, possibly by Dom Riordan who will surely claim it, but was also given as an O.G, no matter, Emley were back level and were going hunting for a winner.
It didn't come, but both teams pushed, harried, clattered and strove for a winner, on a pitch that was by now saturated, Ashton almost had it, but a good free kick was saved well by Clarke, and then another good chance for Eyles, but he shot wide.
So no winner, but both teams walked off to applause from both sets of fans and fully deserved, both sides gave their all in some pretty fierce rain and the result was probably about right in the end.
Emley remain unbeaten on grass this season, their only defeat was on Lower Breck's 3G pitch on the opening day, the result leaves Emley 8th on the NWCFL D1N table
Emley are back on the road again on Saturday when they travel to Garstang (3.00) before their home derby game and a reunion with some ex players when Golcar Utd are the visitors on Monday (3.00)
