Super Emley turned in a fantastic performance to hammer West Yorkshire rivals Brighouse Town and maintain third place in the Northern Premier League Division One East, a first Emley hat trick for Gabriel Johnson being the highlight of the victory.
From the first minute to the last, Emley were superb and dominated every facet of the game, it's probably true to say that had it not been for Brighouse's former on loan Emley keeper Michael Acquah the scoreline could have been even worse for Town, as it was, 5-0 was more than enough.
Despite never giving up and battling until the end, Brighouse simply had no answer to Emley's power, pace and skill, within the first few minutes, Brighouse were defending corners, luckily for them, Acquah managed to catch most of them and the ones he didn't catch, he got enough on to turn away, but he was powerless to stop the Pewits taking a 4th minute lead.
A lovely build up from inside Emley's half saw Bailey Thompson put through, he could have shot himself but instead laid it off to Chris Dawson to fire home only his second goal of the campaign, however, Brighouse came straight back at Emley and at the other end, Emley were mightily relieved to see a shot clip the bar and go over.
That was one of only two serious effort the visitors had in the half as Emley continued to dominate, another couple of corners were won and again, Acquah was able to prevent any serious damage, Dec Lambton in Emley's goals then had to be alert as Brighouse put another attack on and he cleared his lines well.
Emley were playing some good stuff and finding space down both wings, Joe Stacey in particular was a menace all afternoon, taking defenders on and putting balls into dangerous areas, he combined well with Johnson a couple of times, the second one leading to Emley doubling their lead on 25 minutes, Johnson's willingness to chase and work was rewarded and he then fed Turner who set up left back Ellis Farrar to coolly slot home his first home Emley goal, following on from his first ever goal last week at Consett.
Just prior to that, Brighouse had a real chance to draw level but Lambton did superbly well to deny Rhys Plater in a one on one situation, Emley cleared their lines and that was the last real effort we saw from the visitors until late in the second half, there was a feeling that Emley were in total control after the second goal but they still strived for a third before the break.
Another cracking ball in by Stacey from the left found Charlie Barks but his header dipped wide of the post, Bailey Thompson then tried his luck but couldn't find the target and then Johnson was agonisingly close to connecting with another good ball into the area, this time for the right.
Emley were comfortable and a moment which pleased the Emley supporters saw Lambton come out as Plater once again looked for a breakthrough for Brighouse, Lambton calmly dummied his way out of trouble in his six yard box before passing to Farrar who completed the clearance, a good half for the promotion chasing Pewits.
H/T- Emley 2-0 Brighouse Town.
The typical Emley weather greeted us for the second half as the skies turned dark and moody and rainclouds burst, soaking the Fantastic Media Welfare Ground and anyone who wasn't under shelter, most of those sheltering were in the shed where Emley were attacking in the second half, the shed, as is often the case was boisterous and right behind the Pewits.
Straight away, Emley were in attack mode, Stacey's whipped in ball was too hot for Barks at the back post to handle, a couple of minutes later, a well worked move from Emley saw Thompson set up Kurtis Turner on his full home debut but his shot was off target, another terrific move which tore Brighouse apart from right to left finished with a beautiful Stacey ball into the area, which just flashed past Thompson but an offside flag was already up.
Emley were enjoying themselves, they were fast, direct and mobile and pulled Brighouse one way then another, it was tiring to watch from the stands never mind to try and stop them, which is exactly what Town didn't do as Emley notched a deserved third, a scrambled clearance led to an Emley corner which was put right into the danger zone, the visitors couldn't clear it and so Gabriel Johnson decided to poke home from yards out instead to start his streak.
It was surely game over now, Brighouse looked well beaten even with only an hour or so gone and offered very little going forward, more good interplay from Emley around the box saw Lindley and Stacey create an opening but Lindley couldn't quite keep his balance to get the shot on target.
Emley made their first sub when Manny Mampala replaced Dawson, and Mampala then had a hand in Emley's fourth goal, linking up play well to enable Thompson and Johnson to combine yet again and see Gabriel Johnson deftly nick the ball over the advancing keeper just as he was clattered to well and truly put the game beyond Brighouse.
Emley were absolutely rampant and getting forward at will by now, Johnson was inches away from completing a 14 minute hat trick when he slashed a shot wide of the post, as Emley made a triple substitution, Lindley, Stacey and Farrar were given the last 20 minutes off and replaced by Clegg, Rodrigues and Hardaker, followed a few minutes later by Sorhaindo replacing Thompson up front.
It didn't make things any easier for the beleaguered visitors though and it was at this point that Acquah stepped up to keep the scoreline down, for now, first, he made a brilliant save with his legs when Sorhaindo burst through, moments later, after Brighouse had failed to clear sufficiently, the ball fell to Ross Hardaker who placed a crashing shot goalwards but Acquah was acrobatic enough to tip it over for a corner, which was cleared.
The rain had eased off by now but Emley hadn't, they continued to pound Brighouse and it wasn't long before a lovely, fifth goal came Emley's way, Sorhaindo drove deep into the Town defence who couldn't stop him and with the chance to tap home himself with just the keeper to beat, he chose to unselfishly square it to the unmarked Gabriel Johnson to finally complete his hat trick to the delight of the shed.
With the game heading into it's closing stages, Emley weren't settling for five and went in search of more, Carlos Rodrigues was a man on a mission and three times he found himself with shooting chances in the inside left position but couldn't find the target with any of them, same could be said for Mampala who found himself with space to tee up a shot but that one sailed over the roof, as did a similar effort from Clegg following a partially cleared corner.
It appeared everyone wanted to have a go now, but Acquah to his credit again stood firm to deny Emley, gathering dangerous balls played into his area, there should have been a sixth Emley goal right on time as Sorhaindo once again burst into the area and placed a shot past the oncoming Acquah, Emley fans waited for the net to ripple to celebrate again but the ball rolled past the far post to Sorhaindo's disappointment.
The second half was almost all about Emley who played some fantastic stuff at times, Brighouse were limited to the odd pot shot from distance, one of which flew over but they offered very little resistance to a rampant Emley side who are now 8 points clear in the play off places and with a long trip to relegation threatened Ashington to come, but for now, Emley and their fans will enjoy a sixth West Yorkshire derby victory of the season and a second successive league double over Brighouse and a third successive clean sheet against the men from Calderdale.
