Emley 0-2 Bridlington Town

Martin Eastwood5 Apr - 18:25

Pewits beaten by Seasiders on disappointing day.

Emley suffered a third straight defeat as the season is in danger of derailing at the death, thanks to a 2-0 defeat by relegation threatened Bridlington.

Emley's slump in form continued as Bridlington were deserved winners, The Pewits have picked up just 7 points from the last 27 available and have failed to score in 7 of the last 10 games, Emley remain third in the Northern Premier League Division One East but are now just 3 points inside the play off positions.

On a clear, sunny day, Emley were the better team at the start of the game, attacking the Warburton end, we caused the visitors problems, but a season old problem continues to haunt Emley, namely a lack of a cutting edge up front, Emley created space and chances on the first 10-15 minutes but had nothing to show for it.

Donae Lawrence was the latest wearer of the No.9 shirt and he certainly put himself about in the opening stages, an early shot was blocked and then a fine run into the box ended with an Emley corner, and from the corner Adam Clayton headed goalwards but the Brid defence did well to clear for another corner which led to a scramble for the ball, the mini tussle was won by the Bridlington keeper.

Bridlington then created a good chance of their own, and Emley were mightily releived when the shot flew high over the shed roof into the car park, but they would be back.

At the other end, another good run from Lawrence brought another corner, this time, a spectacular overhead clearance from under the bar from a thumping back post header denied Emley.

Lawrence once again found himself in the Bridlington penalty area but he couldn't get enough power on a shot and it was cleared, two minutes later and Donae was thwarted again, getting to the byline but his cross failed to bypass the keeper who snatched it.

Bridlington were by no means out of it and began to assert their dominance halfway through the first half, Emley had to be alert, Cowgill, Clayton and then Sheppeard had to make vital defensive interceptions to protect their goal.

Brid did have a clear chance on 38 minutes, following a corner, the ball was recycled on their left and a dipping, curling ball was heading but Callum Yam did well to tip it over for a corner, but just two minutes later, the loanee keeper was beaten as the visitors took a lead they were never to lose.

Emley failed to clear their lines and the ball was played in behind the defence for Salam and he found the net aided by a slight deflection that seemed to throw Yam, the young keeper would have a mixed day in goals, but would later on prevent the scoreline being a worse one for Emley.

Emley tried to get back into it, but without Harry Sheppeard who came off with what looked like a hamstring injury and was replaced by Ross Hardaker, but again, the final ball and efforts in the final third let them down as we went in down at the break.

H/T - Emley 0-2 Bridlington Town

Bridlington carried on where they left off in the first half, putting Emley under pressure and pushing them back, another defensive lapse led to a break for the Seasiders but a wayward finish meant the score stayed at 1-0, almost a minute later and Emley were back on the backfoot as another Bridlington shot went wide.

Yam was then called into action and pulled off a brilliant save low down as Brid lett fly, Emley cleared the resulting corner, another corner followed soon after as Emley were now under intense pressure defending the Warburton end goals.

A second sub for Emley as Alfie King made his home debut replacing newly crowned player of the month Belchior Rodrigues as Emley fought for a way back into the game, an Emley attack saw the ball not cleared properly but unfortunately for Lawrence, the bouncing ball wouldn't sit right for him and the chance was gone.

Emley were huffing and puffing but failing to break down a resolute Bridlington defence, who repelled a Lawrence shot and then stood firm as King blasted shots into their defenders, one of them was met with a handball appeal from the Pewits but to no avail.

Bridlington then went back on the counter attack and forced Yam into another fine save after Metcalfe's shot was blocked then cleared and a lightning quick attack saw Yam get the better of the attacker with a save with his feet.

However five minutes later and Brid put the game to bed, somewhat controversially, a ball downfield saw Yam rush out to smother it, the ball came loose and Bridlington had the easy task of knocking the ball into the empty net, to the delight of their travelling support, but Emley claimed the ball was in Yam's hands and was kicked out, the referee not having it.

Emley almost shot themselves in the foot again a minute later, another defensive lapse created the opportunity for a third Seasiders goal but Yam made another save to spare the blushes.

A third change for Emley saw Curtis replace Parkin but it didn't change the course of the game, a free kick following a terrible challenge on Berchil saw the afore named shoot straight into the keepers gloves and that was the last we saw of Emley in attack, thankfully, Bridlington's wastefulness in front of goal failed to worsen the scoreline, another great chance was wasted with a shot that was well over.

The last action of the game saw Yam make another decent save to prevent Brid from making it three, it ann truth, they would have deserved it, more disappointment for Emley as the final whistle blew to signal another defeat as the play off push falters.

We face a massive game next week when we travel to fourth placed Belper Town with both clubs' play off hopes hanging by a thread!
