Big FA Vase game next as Pewits look to take a step nearer to Wembley with the visit of former winners.

Emley host Whickham AFC in a crucial FA Vase 5th round tie on Saturday (3pm) looking to make it to the quarter finals for only the 3rd time in our history.

A win on Saturday will emulate the Gerry Quinn sides of 1986/87 and 87/88 who both made the semi finals, the latter of which went one further and lost the 1988 final at Wembley to Colne Dynamoes that year, our visitors, Whickham, won the Vase for the only time in their history 7 years previously in 1981.

Whickham AFC, based in Tyne & Wear were formed in 1944 as Axwell Park Colliery Welfare and currently play in the Northern League Division 1, the same level on the pyramid as Emley and are nicknamed 'The Lang Jacks'.

Emley have already seen off 2 NL sides in this season's competition, dispatching Guisborough Town 2-1 and Heaton Stannington 1-0 and will be confident of making it a hat trick of Northern League scalps following Tuesday's emphatic 5-0 win over Goole which saw The Pewits go clear at the top on the NCEL Premier Division.

Whickham are currently 13th in their division with 8 wins, 2 draws and 9 defeats from their 19 league games, Emley are 5 games unbeaten in all competitions.

Previously in this season's FA Vase, Emley have seen off Sandbach Utd, Brigg Town, Guisborough Town, Heaton Stannington, West Didsbury & Chorlton and Charnock Richard, while Whickham have accounted for Campion, Birtley Town, Ashton Town, Bury, Irlam and Blyth Town.

This will be the second meeting of the sides, we have met once before, in the Vase in 1986/87, Emley beating Whickham 2-0 on the way to the Semi final that season
with goals from Reg Mellor and John Francis.

Last time out:
Emley 5-0 Goole ( Jerome 2, Gooden, Walshaw, Eyles) NCEL Prem, Att- 331
Tow Law Town 2-3 Whickham ( Robson 2, Lavery) NL D1, Att- 85
