Already relegated Newton Aycliffe provide the opposition for Emley's final game in the 2025-26 Northern Premier League Division One East campaign on Saturday (3pm).
Although it's the last scheduled league fixture, it's highly likely that Emley will once again feature in the top 5 promotion play offs, The Pewits are currently 4th and can only miss out if Pontefract beat Dunston and overturn an 18 goal swing. If Pontefract do win at Dunston, an Emley win will see The Pewits finish 3rd and earn a home play off semi final, similarly, a draw at Dunston coupled with an Emley victory will see The Pewits finish 3rd on goal difference.
With Matlock securing second place and a home tie v 5th place, it's now down to Dunston and Emley to claim the 3rd place which will mean a home semi final v 4th place, Emley's comeback draw at Pontefract last Friday could prove to be pivotal after all.
All ifs though, Emley need to just concentrate on getting a result on Saturday and not worry about other results, Newton Aycliffe could be a dangerous proposition, despite suffering relegation, they will want to finish the season on a high, Emley pipped Aycliffe to the last play off place on the final day of last season.
Emley's concerning end of season form has once again let them down, no win in 7 and only 4 points picked up from the 21 available since our last win at Silsden in early March has seen Emley lose control of second, and now third place as we look to finish the season strong.
Newton Aycliffe have endured a miserable run, only two wins since the turn of the year, although both against fellow North East relegation rivals in The Northumberland pair of Ashington and Blyth Spartans at home, their last away win was at Ossett back in January, Emley will be hoping that run extends a bit longer.
This will be the 5th meeting between the sides, 4 in the league and an FA Trophy tie last season, Emley are unbeaten in the league fixtures with 2 wins and a draw while Newton Aycliffe won the trophy tie.
WHO ARE THEY?
Newton Aycliffe were founded in 1965, and joined the Wearside League in 1984 and folded in 1994, however, they reformed playing local Durham county league and rejoined the Wearside league in 2008, before moving up again to the Northern League in 2009 and won promotion to the NPL in 2022-23, 7th and 6th place finishes followed in their two seasons so far in what is the highest the club had ever played.
10 years ago, they reached the 5th round of the FA Vase where they were beaten 5-0 by Camberley Town. They are based at Moore Lane Sports Club and are nicknamed 'The Cliffe'.
