Preview: Maltby Main (Sheffield & Hallamshire Cup Final)

Martin Eastwood16 May 2023 - 09:00

Emley look to grab some silverware as season finally comes to an end.

Despite the league season ending earlier this month, Emley still have one final game to go in season 2022/23, The Sheffield and Hallamshire Senior cup final against Maltby Main on Saturday night at The Eco-Power stadium, home of Doncaster Rovers (7.30pm).

The final is a just reward for the coaching staff, players, fans and all the volunteers for a season where Emley have fought on 3 fronts but missed out by fine margins.

After a 2 way scrap for 2nd place in the Northern Counties East Premier Division between Emley and Winterton, it was Winterton who eventually sealed a play off place, and ultimately promotion after overcoming Coggeshall Town in Essex.

Emley also won their way to a NCEL league cup semi-final, and found themselves up against another Huddersfield side, Emley dominated the game at Golcar Utd but lost out after a dramatic penalty shoot out in front of over 1300 fans, Golcar would lose out in the final to… Winterton Rangers.

But now Emley have a great chance to put some silverware in the cabinet and a prestigious trophy at that, the Sheffield and Hallamshire cup is one of the oldest knockout competitions in the world and a cup that Emley have previous in.

Emley have won the cup 8 times, only Sheffield Wednesday, Sheffield United, Frickley Athletic and Worksop Town have won more titles than the Pewits, so impressive company indeed, the men in claret and blue have graced the final 15 times previously, the first one in 1975/76 when Worksop were beaten 2-0 at Hillsborough.

This is Emley’s first final since 2002 however , when they were beaten by Doncaster Rovers at Hillsborough, indeed, that final was the last of 5 successive finals at Sheffield Wednesday’s vast stadium, but only 1 win in that period, a 3-0 win over Parkgate in 1997/98, the same season as the famous cup run.

Maltby will be in their second successive final after losing out 0-3 to Worksop last year at the same venue, they have won the competition only once, in 1977/78 beating Mexborough.

The sides have met twice previously as they both played in the NCEL Premier Division with nothing between them, a 1-1 draw at Maltby and 2-2 at Emley.

Emley qualified for the final with an impressive 7-0 win over Nostell, while Maltby needed penalties to see off Sheffield FC.
