Emley welcome football league opposition twice in 4 days as our pre-season campaign gets underway with two big tests against Huddersfield Town and Barnsley FC.
Last season’s spectacular return to the Northern Premier League for the first time in a quarter of a century saw Emley not only survive but defy all the odds as we were frontrunners for most of the season, leading the table for parts of it before falling away towards the end, we still made the play offs where a last minute defeat at Dunston in the play off semi-final ended our fantastic season.
Huddersfield Town visit the Fantastic Media Welfare Ground on Saturday 28th June (3pm) and will be a repeat of the fixture last summer, which saw the Terriers run out 5-0 winners in what was Town manager Michael Duff’s first game in charge of the newly relegated league 1 side in front of the biggest crowd at the ground for over 25 years, 1,657.
A year on and it will be Lee Grant’s first game in charge of a town team that failed to make the play offs last season when it appeared that they were strong contenders for an immediate return to the Championship. Duff lasted 10 months and 46 games as town manager, winning 20 of those but he was replaced as permanent manager by former Sheffield Wednesday and Derby goalkeeper Grant.
Such is the nature of professional football that Huddersfield have had SIXTEEN managers in the time that Richard Tracey has been Emley boss, although some of them were interim or caretaker managers, however, only three of them managed for more than 30 games!
Town finished a disappointing 10th in League 1 last year, 14 points off a play off place and lost 8 out of their last 10 matches, Emley's end of season finished on a similar vein, winning only 3 of our last 10 but doing enough to get into the end of season play offs.
The game last year was played in 3x30 minute periods with town playing a strong side in each period and running out 5-0 winners against the recently crowned Northern Counties East League champions with goals from Headley, Jones, Kasumu, Wiles and Simpson.
