Emley head to Goole looking for title and promotion pleasure at the Pleasure Grounds.

Emley travel to Goole looking to wrap up the Northern Counties East League Premier Division title on Saturday (3pm) and they could do it without even getting a point themselves!

Mathematically, Emley need a minimum of 2 points to be absolutely certain of finishing top of the league. In reality 1 point would suffice due to Emley's far superior goal difference. However a win at Goole would end the contest then and there.

Here's how things stand going into Saturday's games:

  • Emley are top on 78 points, with 4 games to play, including a game in hand on Campion
  • Campion are 2nd on 70 points with 3 games to play
  • Campion can only muster a maximum of 79 points
  • Even if Emley can only secure a point from the final four fixtures, Campion would need to overhaul a +28 goal difference
  • Anything less than a win for Campion in each of their final 3 games and the title is Emley's regardless of The Pewits' results

Promotion for Emley would emulate Gerry Quinn's class of 1988/89 - the last time Emley were crowned NCEL champions and promoted to the NPL.

Whilst Goole have been involved in a relegation battle for most of the season, 7 points from the last 9 available have given The Vikings a great chance of staying up - something that looked unlikely just a few short weeks ago. They won't want to roll the red carpet out for the champions elect on their own patch and it could be a league double for the Pewits as we thrashed Goole 5-0 at home in February.

The differences in both clubs' seasons and position is summed up by the fact that Goole have used an astonishing 64 players this season, with 23 of those no longer registered with the club. Emley meanwhile have used exactly half of that number with 32. Sixteen of those players have featured in 20+ games, compared with Goole where only 2 players out of their 64 have played more than 20 games - a remarkable stat.

Goole will be hoping their attack can finally breach the Emley defence - Goole have failed to score in the last 4 meetings between the sides and have only scored once in the last 5 games and both sides' last outings were home wins over Albion Sports

Emley will look to their fine travelling support to get over to the East Riding and hopefully join them in a promotion party at the Victoria Pleasure Grounds.

Last time out:
NCELP Goole 3-1 Albion Sports ( Ward, Waud, Hussein) Att- 281
NCELP Emley 1-0 Albion Sports ( Gooden) Att- 489.
