FA Cup adventure begins for Emley with a trip to the Derbyshire hills

After only a week of the 2022/23 season gone, Emley find themselves “on the road to Wembley” on Saturday when they travel over the hills to face Glossop North End in the extra preliminary round (3pm).

It’s sure to be a tough ask for the Pewits against a side from a higher level, Glossop play in the Northern Premier League First Division West, Emley faced opposition from the same league last year but were defeated by City of Liverpool on the Wirral.

Emley’s season started with a defeat away at North Ferriby last Saturday so an FA Cup win at a higher ranked team would surely give them a boost going into next Tuesday’s opening home league game with Thackley?

This will be Glossop’s first competitive game after they completed their pre season campaign, their first league game will be, somewhat ironically, City of Liverpool.

This isn’t the first time Emley, and Glossop have met in this competition, Emley were sound 4-1 winners way back in 1974/75 at the Welfare Ground, Emley’s fans and officials will be hoping for something similar!

WHO ARE THEY? Glossop North End AFC were founded in 1886, in 1898, they were elected to the second division of the football league and won promotion to the first division after finishing runners up to Manchester City, the joy didn’t last though, and they were relegated straight back down after winning only 4 games.

They failed to get re elected to the league after the 1914-18 war and have remained amateur/semi pro ever since, becoming founder members of the North West Counties League in 1982.

Like Emley, Glossop have also played at Wembley, in an FA Vase final in 2009, but lost to Whitley Bay.

They play at Surrey Street in the town centre which is a stones throw away from their old football league ground and are nicknamed The Hillmen.
