The Pewits welcome The Shakers to Emley

Emley’s pre-season continues with three more games at the Fantastic Media Welfare Ground, with visits from Bury, Hallam, and Wakefield, as we look forward to our Northern Premier League Division One East campaign.

Emley vs. Bury FC, Tuesday 2nd July, 7:45 pm.

Emley faces a Bury side that narrowly failed to gain promotion to the NPL themselves following a play-off final defeat at Wythenshawe in the North West Counties Premier Division.

Football in Bury has had a complicated few years. Following the EFL suspension of Bury FC in 2019, a new “phoenix club” was formed, Bury AFC, which played in the NWCFL. Bury FC was inactive on the field but still had the ground, Gigg Lane. Meanwhile, Bury AFC groundshared at Radcliffe. There were, in effect, two clubs: one with a ground but no team, and one with a team but no ground, with many fans split between the two.

In 2023, the two clubs agreed to merge and restore the Bury FC name, thus continuing the history of the club that won the FA Cup twice. The “new” Bury FC was allowed to carry on AFC’s place in the NWCL and returned to playing at Gigg Lane.

Bury recently announced the signings of two of Emley’s heroes from our championship-winning team last season. The signings of the NCEL’s 38-goal top scorer Ruben Jerome, along with Iyrwah Gooden, were considerable coups for the Shakers.

We’re sure that Emley fans will give them a warm welcome back should they both feature.
