Preview: Bridlington Town (A)

Martin Eastwood19 Mar - 19:35

Emley are Brid bound as we face a trip to the seaside.

Emley head to the east coast on Saturday looking to get back on the path to promotion when they visit Bridlington Town in the Northern Premier League Division One East on Saturday (3pm).

The Pewits are third in the table after two defeats from the last three games which has seen the promotion play off race bust wide open, rivals Matlock have also slipped up too allowing Redcar Athletic to just about wrap up the league title, but Emley and Matlock have Dunston, Pontefract and Bradford (Park Avenue) breathing down their necks now.

Following defeats at Bishop Auckland and last week's first home defeat since October against Heaton Stannington, Emley won't want to drop anymore points, Matlock once again took second place from Emley by winning on Tuesday but BPA lost at Heaton Stannington.

Bridlington were once again well fancied to challenge for promotion but find themselves mired in mid table following another disappointing season last year when they only just escaped relegation for the second season running, they were on their way to a win at Ashington in midweek before a 96th minute equaliser meant it's 3 games without a win for The Seasiders.

Emley have won 2 out of the last 3 games between the clubs since our promotion back to the NPL, with a comfortable 3-0 win at home this season, which came in November and a 2-0 win at Queensway last November, however Bridlington won the corresponding fixture at Emley last season, also by 2-0.

(Interesting facts) That sequence of the losers being nilled in this fixture stretches back 6 games to 2004 when (Wakefield-Emley) were 2-0 winners, indeed, the last time the losing team scored a goal in this fixture was way back in April 1994 when Emley won 2-1 at Bridlington!

WHO ARE THEY?
Formed in 1918 as Bridlington Central United, they adopted their current name in 1920 and played predominantly in the Yorkshire League before becoming founder members, with Emley, of the NCEL in 1982, during that time, Town enjoyed a rivalry with Bridlington Trinity who folded in 1990.

The original Bridlington Town then folded in 1994, just 2 years after winning the FA Vase at Wembley, their second final at the twin towers following the 1989-90 final, but they were soon back on the scene in the Driffield and district league, quickly gaining promotions back to the NPL within 8 years, after a spell back in the NCEL, they were promoted again to the NPL in 2021-22 where they have remained since.
