Tykes next up as the Pewits' pre season continues

Emley welcome Football League opposition for the second time in four days as our pre-season campaign continues with another high-profile test against League One side Barnsley Football Club on Tuesday (7pm).

Last season marked a spectacular return to the Northern Premier League for the first time in 25 years. Emley not only survived but defied all odds, emerging as frontrunners for most of the season and even leading the table at times. Though the team's form dipped towards the end, we still reached the play-offs, where our fantastic season ultimately concluded with a heartbreaking last-minute defeat to Dunston in the semi-final.

Emley kicks off the pre-season with two tough home tests. A crowd of 1,977 showed up for Saturday's game, and we look forward to welcoming Barnsley on Tuesday. The team will then hit the road for the remainder of pre-season as we aim to match or improve upon our eye-catching first season at non-league step 4.

Tomorrow evening, we welcome Conor Hourihane's Barnsley to Emley. Having hosted their development team in the county cup last season, we now look forward to facing their senior side in what will be our second and final home pre-season fixture. The Pewits will return home in August, fixtures are due mid July.

Hourihane will be familiar with Emley's claret and blue colours, having represented Aston Villa 132 times. Now at the helm of Barnsley, he aims to guide the team back to the EFL Championship following their relegation in 2021-22. The Tykes finished last season in 12th place in League One, a disappointing outcome after reaching the play-offs in their previous two campaigns.

The 2024/25 season marked Barnsley's lowest finishing position in two decades. Like our first visitors Huddersfield Town, they'll be using the Emley fixture as a launching pad for what they hope will be a much-improved campaign.

While Emley claimed a 3-2 victory over Barnsley's young side in last season's Sheffield and Hallamshire Cup quarter-final, tomorrow's challenge comes from their full first-team squad, who are visiting Emley for the very first time.
