Short hop for Emley as top meets bottom in local derby.

Northern Premier League Division 1 East leaders Emley make the short trip to Ossett to face bottom club Ossett United in the latest derby match, at Ingfield, on Saturday (3pm).

It's around a 7.5 mile journey up and downhill and over the River Calder from Emley to Ossett but there's 20 league places separating the sides as things stand as the teams have had very mixed fortunes to the start of the season.

Emley have only tasted defeat once in the league while Ossett have only won once in their 9 league games so far.

This will be the first ever meeting of the sides, Ossett United only came into being in 6 years ago following the merger of Ossett Albion and Ossett Town and both clubs were familiar opponents to Emley over the years.

The merger took place on June 1st 2018, despite both Ossett clubs being regulars in the NPL on their own steam and were initially successful, taking both Town and Albion's place in the NPL D1 East, they finished 5th and qualified for the 2018-19 NPL Play offs, losing out to Pontefract Collieries, they were then transferred to NPL D1 West where they struggled, finishing 3rd from bottom, then bottom during the pandemic seasons.

Transferred back to D1 East in 2021-22, they have finished 9th, 15th and 16th since, their best FA Cup performance was in 2019-20 where they lost to Colne in a 2nd qualifying round replay, they are nicknamed The Blackbirds or Sheepicorns and play at Ingfield which was Ossett Town's home from 1957, in the centre of town.

Emley stay top despite their first league loss last weekend but followed that up with a 1-0 win over Sherwood Colliery in midweek, Ossett's last league game was 0-2 defeat to Belper Town but they beat Prescot Cables last week to progress in the FA Trophy.

Ossett's only league win came away at Consett and they'll be hoping for a big crowd and their first home win of the league season, Emley, will as usual, be backed by a good following and looking to maintain their unbeaten away record.

Last time out:
Emley 1-0 Sherwood Colliery ( Parkin), Att- 331, NPL D1 East
Ossett 2-0 Prescot Cables (Stephens, Church) Att- 273, FAT 3Q.
