Emley look forward to season opener on Saturday

Emley rounded off their pre-season campaign after last night’s wet 2-0 defeat at Pontefract Collieries.

It marks the end of a campaign that started with a 6-0 home thrashing of new NCEL Premier Division members and local Huddersfield rivals Golcar United on the 1st of July in which last years top scorer George Doyle picked up from last season with a first half trick, the other 3 goals came from trialists as Emley were far too strong for their rivals. The teams will face off in this years league campaign too after Golcar’s promotion to step 5 saw them moved laterally from the NWCFL.

Next up was a repeat of a fixture from last year’s preseason when Northern Premier side Liversedge visited the Fantastic Media Welfare Ground and as last season, Liversedge, who have spent big and enjoyed successive promotions showed their class as they defeated the Pewits 6-1 with another trialist bagging Emley’s goal.

It was another unregistered player who got Emley’s next goal, this time to earn a 1-0 at NCEL Division 1 side Worsbrough Bridge in Barnsley.

Emley then hosted another NPL side, this time Stocksbridge Park Steels and earned a 2-2 draw thanks to a last minute goal by Joe Jagger, Emley had taken the lead through new signing Irywah Gooden, but the steels managed to turn it around before Jagger’s strike earned the Pewits a deserved draw.

Another home game and this time against another new NCEL member, Wakefield, promoted from the Sheffield and Hallamshire league and expected to mount a serious challenge for promotion to the NCEL premier, but Emley proved too strong for them on the night winning 3-2, despite going a goal behind from a penalty, Emley hit back in the 2nd half with Jaydan Sandhu, Donae Lawrence and Antony Leech, Wakefield then clawed one back from a screamer but couldn’t get back on level terms.

Emley were then on the road again the next day, another trip to South Yorkshire, this time to face Rossington Main of the NCEL Division 1 in Doncaster, it was certainly a game of 2 halves, with Emley leading 2-0 at the break thanks to goals from another new signing in Rikki Paylor and one from veteran Dom Riordan, but the hosts came back strongly to score 4 second half goals to win the game 4-2.

Finally, Emley ended the preseason games with a 2-0 defeat at Pontefract Collieries, again from the NPL to complete their preparations for the new NCEL Premier Division season which begins on the banks of the Humber on Saturday when Emley and their travelling fans make the journey to North Ferriby.
