We speak to Emley AFC manager Richard Tracey to reflect on recent results and preview up coming games.

Emley AFC has kicked off their FA Cup campaign in style, delivering strong performances in the early rounds. After narrowly edging St Helens 1-0 at home in the Extra Preliminary Round, the Pewits made a statement with a commanding 3-0 victory over Trafford in their latest fixture. Now, they prepare to face Morpeth Town in the FA Cup 1st Qualifying Round – a clash that promises to test their mettle.

This upcoming fixture brings back memories of a notable FA Cup encounter between the two clubs back in 2010, when Emley secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory away at Morpeth. Much like then, Morpeth currently ply their trade in the division above Emley, competing in the Northern Premier League Premier Division. Morpeth, who enter the competition at this stage, have previously made it as far as the 4th Qualifying Round on two occasions, including a memorable draw with York City in 2021 that forced a replay. Their most famous run, however, was in 1998 when they lost to Burton Albion in the same round.

For Emley, their FA Cup history is highlighted by the legendary run to the third round proper in 1998, where they famously faced Premier League side West Ham United. Last season, the Pewits reached the third qualifying round before a narrow defeat at Alfreton Town, a stage they will be eager to surpass this time around.

In their last outing, Emley traveled to Trafford, delivering a composed and clinical performance. The game tilted in their favor early on when Trafford’s Matthews was shown a straight red card for a reckless challenge on Emley's Adam Clayton just 15 minutes in. From there, Emley seized control of the match.

Nathan Curtis opened the scoring in the 32nd minute, neatly finishing a cross from the influential Amir Berchil. Berchil then doubled the advantage before halftime with a stunning strike. Trafford mounted some second-half pressure, but Emley’s defense held firm, with Tom Haigh impressing in an unfamiliar centre-back role. A late counterattack saw Berchil add a third, sealing a comprehensive 3-0 win.

Reflecting on the game, Emley manager Richard Tracey acknowledged the significance of the early red card but was quick to praise his team’s performance: “Going away in the FA Cup is always difficult, but we started really well. The sending off tilted things in our favor, but we were already looking sharp. Amir had an outstanding game – scored two, set one up, and was a constant threat. Tom Haigh also deserves credit for stepping in at centre-back and putting in a fantastic shift.”

Looking ahead to the tie against Morpeth, Tracey recognizes the challenge that awaits: “They’re one of the top northern teams, being in the division above us they can attract some real quality players. Although they had a tough start, losing their first three games, they bounced back with a win against Stockton, who’ve started brilliantly. We know they’ve got quality on their side.”

Despite the daunting task, Tracey remains confident that his squad can rise to the occasion: “It’ll be a big test on their astroturf pitch, but we’ll go up there and give it our all. Last year’s FA Cup run showed that it’s possible if everyone digs in with the same goal. We’re pleased with the squad depth we’ve built, and this match will be a good indicator of where we stand in comparison to a team from a higher level.”

As Emley prepares for this crucial cup tie, supporters will be hoping their team can replicate the spirit of their 2010 victory and continue their impressive FA Cup journey.
