Emley can’t repeat Wigan heroics as debutant ‘keeper dismissed and Ossett Town progress in FA Cup.

A three-goal Ossett win looked a world away in the opening 20 minutes of this cup-tie as AFC Emley were camped in their opponent's half. But the end product eluded the visitors with Mark Crossfield, Brighton Mugadza and Liam Schofield all seeing half-chances saved or pass the wrong side of the woodwork.

The Evo-stick First Division North side took the warnings seriously and slowly made progress further up the field. Emley had goalkeeper Chris Senior, making his debut, for a smart save right on the line from an Ossett Town cross.

The hosts continued to put the Emley defence under pressure but, despite a couple of vociferous penalty appeals being turned down, managed to hold firm.

The best chance of the first half fell to Brighton Mugazda, his direct running caused Town problems throughout; on 32 minutes he beat defender Nick Wood to the ball but was only able to put his effort into the side netting from the right of the six yard box.

Emley went into the break the happier side with the Ossett Town manager sending his team back on to the pitch early for the start of the second half.

It wasn’t long before Ossett got their reward. On 53 minutes, Eyles’ initial effort was saved by Senior but Eyles followed up to side foot home into the empty net.

Emley continued to fight hard but didn’t manage to create a clear-cut chance in open play.

Senior was unfortunate to be booked for what looked like a good saving tackle outside his box on the Ossett Town left.

Ossett doubled their advantage with 5 minutes to go. Fox took a tumble in the area but poked the ball to Luke Sharry who tapped the ball home to make it 2-0.

Paul Sykes cleared an Eyles effort off the line but Senior was adjudged to have caught the striker late. Senior received his marching orders for a second yellow. Captain Sykes donned the gloves for the resulting penalty but was sent the wrong way by Eyles for his second and Ossett Town’s third.

The 3-0 result flattered the hosts and while Emley will be pleased with the overall performance, there will be disappointment the early dominance didn’t bring a break through that could have changed the tie.

Ossett now host Bamber Bridge in the next round.
