AFC Emley’s long unbeaten run came to an abrupt halt at the Welfare Ground writes Joe Link.

A brilliant brace from Teversal forward Jordan Jones’s meant Darren Hepworth’s men slumped to a shock 3-2 defeat, having led 2-0 at the break, paying homage to the footballing cliché ‘a game of two halves’.

Emley started the game with much intent by creating some good chances. Ruben Jerome was Emley’s most potent threat in the first half and had a golden opportunity inside 5 minutes when he found himself in on goal, but he drove his shot straight at ‘keeper Ryan Brooks and the subsequent rebound was ballooned over the bar.

Despite their Captain Sean Dickinson, who looked lively for the away side, Emley were in control. This was evident when they took the lead in the 28th minute. A superb run by Jerome down the left wing led to a cross which, after a goal mouth scramble finally fell to Jonny Irving, who volleyed the ball past a stranded Brooks to put the home side 1-0 up.

The home fans didn’t have to wait long before they were celebrating a second goal, which was finished nicely by Antony Leech in the 34th minute, after he got on the end of a poor clearance.

Teversal were on the ropes in the first half and were lucky to go in at the break just 2 goals down.

In the second half, Jerome switched from the left wing to the right and was much quieter. Emley were not creating as many chances and this led to renewed hope within the Teversal camp.

Hope which was boosted further when their right back, Daniel Pearson, rifled a low drive past Adam Lawlor to make it 2-1 in the 56th minute.

Emley were rattled and started conceding clumsy fouls. One of which saw captain Paul Sykes receive a yellow card.

However, Emley looked set to hold out for another 3 points and in order to sure up the defence in the final ten minutes, Hepworth brought on substitute Jack Steers. Unfortunately for Emley the complete opposite came true and their backline was breached twice in quick succession. Jones’ first goal was a sublime lob over Lawlor on 87 minutes, which put his side level at 2-2 and his second was an even more spectacular 25 yard curler, which Lawlor could have done nothing to keep out in the 90th minute.

The home fans were stunned by Emley’s late capitulation, but they remain 7th in the league.
