Goals from Jonny Irving and Paul Sykes secured three points at Grimsby Borough, extending their unbeaten run to 7 games reports Tom Burley

The visitors left the Bradley Football Centre in Grimsby with three points following a very impressive display. The fans could leave the sun soaked east coast feeling very satisfied.

After a tight and feisty first half, neither side really laid down a real marker. But following the restart Emley took real control of the game. With second half goals from substitute Jonny Irving and captain Paul Sykes from the penalty spot. A late own goal against the run of play from Sam Jerome made it a frantic finish but in the end Emley held on.

This game was a bit of a mismatch looking at recent form, with Emley on a 6 match unbeaten run and Grimsby Borough having lost there last 3.

Grimsby Borough had a real dogged look about them in the first half, getting in the faces of the opposition and stopping them from playing. But in the process they didn't cause Emley any major problems defensively.

However, on 16 minutes, Alex Hallam created some space smartly and drilled a low ball across the penalty area with Sylbert Stewart and Ruben Jerome just inches away from making it 1-0.

Minutes after, midfielder Josh Ingham picked up a knock and hobbled off, he was replaced by Jonny Irving.

Whatever Darren Hepworth said at half time definitely worked as Emley came out for the second half looking very confident.

After the second half started Emley took the lead in rather fortuitous circumstances. Following a bit of smart play outside the box substitute Jonny Irving's shot was heading straight for Grimsby keeper Brad Beattie before the sun decided to intervene. Causing the keeper to drop the ball into his own net.

This was a major blow to the home side, who never really recovered from it.

Not long after, the impressive Max Leonard won back possession and fed Sylbert Stewart, he caused the Grimsby right back Stevie Wright all sorts of problems and won a penalty on the touchline just inside the box.

Captain Paul Sykes stepped up and blasted the penalty, Beattie got a hand to it but it wasn't enough to stop the visitors taking a 2-0 lead.

Darren Hepworth decided to shuffle the pack and bring on Ryan Pleasants and Doran Jordan for the remainder of the match, replacing Max Leonard and Ruben Jerome.

The Grimsby heads had dropped and Emley created several opportunities, they could have scored 4 or 5. Doran Jordan and Antony Leech's link up play caused Grimsby left back Kyle Bensley all sorts of problems.

Ryan Pleasants could have extended the lead with a brilliant turn and volley but his shot flashed just wide of the far post. The game looked to be settled 2-0.

This was until Danny Beecham was fouled 30 yards from goal, and from the resulting free kick his delivery took a deflection off the unfortunate Sam Jerome.

However the brief Grimsby fight back turned out to be too late, and Emley comfortably held on to secure another 3 points. In the process it extended the clubs unbeaten run and leaves them feeling confident ahead of their trip to Hall Road Rangers next week.
