A brace from Sam Jerome aided AFC Emley as they came from a goal down to claim a convincing win over Appleby Frodingham writes Lewis Larkam.

Emley stretched their unbeaten run to six games as they brushed aside Frodingham at The Welfare Ground, taking a much deserved three points in the process.

After a bright start to the game, not all went to plan in the 11th minute. A dangerous run from Donaldson teed up Oliver Bradbury to make no mistake in placing the ball past Adam Lawlor, giving the visitors an early lead.

Emley came straight back into the ascendency, taking just 4 minutes to find an equaliser through captain Paul Sykes, who neatly finished an effort from close range following a low corner.

Chances continued to fall for Emley as they went in search of another, lovely link up play between Steve Kenworthy, Sylbert Stewart and the impressive debutant Max Leonard caused havoc as Frodingham struggled to deal with the potent threat. A tricky run from January’s player of the month Stewart set Josh Ingham bearing down on goal, only to see his effort parried by the Appleby keeper.

At the other end, Emley were commanding at the back. Sam Jerome formed a formidable partnership alongside Sykes, with both players standing firm to deal with everything that came their way.

Appleby Frodingham’s resistance was finally broken just before the break. A free kick from the left taken by Leonard in the 44th minute surprised everyone as his low cross was met by Jerome, whose faintest of touches was enough to see the ball bobble past the helpless Appleby keeper and into the far corner. Emley could have had another in stoppage time as Stewart saw his effort saved before Jerome kissed the badge in celebration as the half time whistle blew.

The second half kicked off at a frantic pace, just 3 minutes had passed when a controversial decision enraged the Appleby players. A brilliant free kick was met by the head of Bradbury, forcing Lawlor into a smart save, smothering the ball right on the line as ‘The Steelmen’ appealed for a goal which was not given.

The response from Emley was almost immediate as a great pass from Sykes found Michael Tunnacliffe in acres of space as he whipped in a fantastic cross towards Kenworthy, whose downward header agonisingly came back off the post with the keeper beaten.

Emley saw claims of a handball waved away as they pushed on for more goals; within seconds of coming on substitute Ruben Jerome almost scored as he tormented the visiting defence before seeing his delightful chip tipped over the bar. The younger Jerome’s impact was instrumental as he set up fellow sub Ryan Pleasant who thought he had scored before the offside flag ruled out his attempt.

It took until the 86th minute for Emley to seal the victory, as another low free kick, this time from Ingham was met at the back post by the hard working Stewart who slid the ball home. The lively home supporter’s joy was increased as Sam Jerome capped off a fine performance with his second goal, firing into the corner from the edge of the area in the dying moments to make it four.

A determined effort from ‘The Pewits’ was rewarded when the final whistle was blown as the game ended 4-1.
