Liam Schofield’s stunning second half strike earned AFC Emley a point against Yorkshire Amateur writes Luke Marino.

Debutant Ryan Pleasants, controversially put Emley ahead but goals either side of half time, first from Curtis Bernard and then Roy Stamer, saw the visitors take the lead. Following Schofield’s spectacular effort and a frantic last couple of minutes, both sides failed in claiming all three points.

It wasn’t the outcome Darren Hepworth would have originally hoped for, but come the final whistle there should be no complaints.

On a bitter afternoon at the Welfare Ground neither side managed to stamp their authority on the game and a draw was the fair outcome.

The opening exchanges appeared to set the theme for the rest of the game. Until Emley broke the deadlock on 17 minutes, both sides looked to be struggling in retaining possession and any team scoring the opener looked unlikely. But thanks to Pleasants’ header a goal did come, albeit in contentious circumstances.

The ball came in from a Schofield corner and Pleasants, in his first appearance for the club, met with his head and directed it goal wards. The ball was hacked off the line but Emley appeared convinced the whole ball had gone over, whilst the visitors strongly protested. With the referee undecided he called upon his assistant, who signaled for a goal, leaving Yorkshire Amateur incensed by the decision.

Minutes later Steve Kenworthy had the perfect opportunity from the penalty spot to double the lead. With the regular penalty taker Paul Sykes, up in the stands – serving the first of his three-match ban – Kenworthy took responsibility. In hind-site one would have hoped not, as his spot kick was comfortably parried away by Surowa Bogana.

Emley appeared to rue their missed chance as Yorkshire Amateur leveled five minutes before the break. After both Craig Heard and Stamer went close moments before, Bernard, provided the clinical touch tapping into the empty net following a low cross by Carl Heard.

Despite sharing the third worse away record in the league the visitors, spurred on by their equalizer, took the lead just sixty seconds into the second half. Bernard, with his back to goal played a first time pass out to the left into the path of unmarked Stamer, who calmly slotted the ball past onrushing Lawlor.

As expected Emley tried to push for the leveler and on 69 minutes it came. A half hearted clearance from the Yorkshire Amateur defence left the ball rolling out towards Schofield, around 20 yards from goal. Located in the left hand side position, Schofield, first time, delicately looped the ball into to the far corner of the net leaving Bogana gawping at such a memorable strike.

Both sides went in search of the victory late on. Minutes after Joel Hughes had a promising penalty appeal turned down, the substitute rallied himself again and forced Lawlor into a point blank save. Meanwhile, Josh Ingham went close for the home side, but his effort could only roll agonizingly past the far post.

Emley now travel to the City of Bradford in hope of capitalizing on Eccleshill United’s poor home form.
