Brighton Mugadza scored a hat trick as AFC Emley recorded their biggest win of the season, thrashing Grimsby Borough 7-2 at The Welfare Ground.

The hosts dominated the majority of the game and in all fairness could have added more to the score line if it wasn’t for the woodwork and some smart saves from the Borough goalkeeper, James Swann.

A superb first half performance from Emley ensured that the game was all but over after the first 45, as they deservedly went into the break 4-1 to the good.

Although Mugadza scored three, it was in fact Adam Todd on the 13th minute who got proceedings underway. A delicately chipped ball from Josh Ingham, over the top of the Grimsby defence, resulted in Todd bringing the ball down in the inside right position of the penalty area, and finding a yard of space to fire a low shot between the goalkeeper’s legs.

Then, on the 23rd minute, Mugadza claimed the first of his three goals. A long ball over the top saw Grimsby’s defence running towards their own goal and chasing Todd, who was one-on-one with the keeper. It looked for the entire world that the forward was going to slot it home for his second of the match but instead, he unselfishly squared the ball to Mugadza, whose effort rebounded of the goalie and then ricocheted off Mugadza into the empty net.

Minutes later, Emley made it three from left-back Liam Schofield. Along with Ryan Brook, Schofield provided width throughout the whole of the first half and posed a real threat when going forward, and deserved his goal. Todd, again the architect, played a ball into the box for Schofield, who guided his shot into the far corner of the net with help from a deflection.

A superb opening thirty minutes by Emley was slightly dampened by Grimsby’s Matthew Hall as his curling first time shot went straight into the top right hand corner, leaving Danny Armitage stranded.

Determined not to let Borough back into the game, the home side were quickly back on track and mounted more pressure on the visitors; Aaron Joseph, coming the closest.

A fourth goal was looking ever more likely and so it came on the 43rd minute. Todd, inside the area, with his back to goal, controlled the ball well and gained himself a yard of space to fire it home, notching up his second of the afternoon.

Captain Paul Sykes also got on the score sheet as he calmly converted a penalty early in the second half after a Grimsby defender was adjudged to have handled in the area.

With the game already in the bag, understandably Darren Hepworth’s side slightly dropped of the pace and allowed Hall to claim his second of the game minutes before the hour mark, reducing the gap to 5-2.

It was the only time that the two centre backs in Sykes and Sam Jerome got caught out. Other than that the pair - more notably Jerome - looked solid and mopped up any danger that looked to come their way.

Despite dropping down a gear Emley still created chances, with substitute Mark Crossfield getting the better of them, but his header went crashing onto the bar.

It wasn’t until the 91st and 92nd minute when Mugadza sealed his hat-trick, rounding off an emphatic victory for the claret and blue.

It was a much welcomed win for AFC Emley as it has been a difficult week both on and off the pitch, but they’ll now look to put that fully behind them and repeat this eye catching performance at home to Teversal, on Tuesday night.
