A Steven Kenworthy hat trick capped a dominant Emley display as they ran out 7-1 winners over Dinnington.

Despite the constant sleet and rain Emley were able to deliver an excellent footballing display and were full value for their win.

Anthony Haigh went close early on but saw his header nodded off the line by Bradley Billam. It wasn’t long before Emley were in the lead however with Haigh scoring a brilliant goal 10 minutes into the game.

The move started at the back with John Cyrus who weighted a brilliant ball through the Rossington defence. Haigh timed his run brilliantly and spotting Liam Copley off his line delivered the perfect lob over the keepers head high into the back of the net.

Copley, who was kept busy throughout the net was often his sides last line of defence and came flying out of the box to halt Josh Ingham who must have been 40 yards from goal with the open net at his mercy. Soon after he also denied Levi Maturine in a more orthodox manner on the edge of the box.

On 20 minutes it was 2-0, Copley was left stranded as he attempted to punch clear a corner and Maturine stabbed the ball back into the mix. It fell to Cyrus who fed Kenworthy to fire in unmarked from close range.

Emley continued to dominate and it was no surprise that they added a 3rd goal on 32 minutes as Haigh headed home his second of the game from a Liam Schofield corner. Haigh’s tally is now 18 for the season – an excellent return from midfield.

The goal of the game came on 43 minutes and was started and finished by Doran Jordan. The winger played in Steven Kenworthy down the left flank before making a darting run to the edge of the box to receive the ball back then drilled in a stunning strike which flew into the top right hand corner of the goal.

4-0 down at half time there was no way back in for Rossington but they did rally in the early stages of the second half. Adam Wilson forced a good low save from Paul Day before Liam Schofield cleared the lines from advancing Rossington attackers.

A brilliant run by full back Billam from inside his own half culminated with a dipping shot which went just over the bar – a goal would have been well deserved for his efforts. Soon after Day made a brave save at the feet of Wilson as the visitors best spell of the game yielded no end result.

The biggest cheer of the day was reserved for the introduction of Mark Wilson from the bench on 67 minutes. The 41 year old making his return to the Welfare Ground almost 13 years after the former Emley FC relocated to Wakefield.

Copley made decent saves from an ambitious Haigh effort and a low drive by Maturine before Emley registered their 5th goal on 70 minutes.

After latching onto a ball by Matt Thornton, Kenworthy pulled the ball back from the goal line then dribbled the ball back inside and round the post to tap in on the line.

Haigh was denied a deserved hat trick with Copley tipping his vicious 15 yard drive onto the post but it was 6-0 minutes later after Maturine slotted a low angled drive underneath the advancing Copley.

As Emley turned the screw dangerous crosses by both Thornton and Kenworthy flew across the face of goal, on each occasion they were inches away from being turned over the line.

Rossington did grab a consolation through Jonathan Mirfin as his 78th minute strike from the edge of the box took a deflection on the way in making it 6-1. To their credit the visitors always looked to play good football right through to the final whistle but they were up against an Emley side who when in a dominant mood have the firepower to punish a team.

Kenworthy wrapped up the scoring for Emley in the 82 minute turning home a Haigh cross from inside the 6 yard box. This was a well earned hat trick for the striker who showed a real hunger for goals and continued to graft throughout even when the game was well and truly out of sight.

In all an excellent team performance and a convincing win achieved without injured leading scorer Ashley Flynn and captain Paul Sykes. A special mention should go to Anthony Leech who captained the side and lead by example in Sykes’ absence.
