A resounding 7-0 victory over basement side Selby elevated Emley into 4th place in the league table. Ashley Flynn, the league’s leading scorer lead the way with 4 of the goals as Emley put in a dominant display.

The visitors gifted Emley a dream start with barely a minute on the clock as Selby defender Luke Crowther looped a header into his own net unchallenged from a deep free kick by Paul Sykes.

Flynn came close to doubling the lead soon after, curling a free kick over the wall but Danny Montgomery saved well. Fellow striker Steven Kenworthy also went close after displaying a good control to turn his marker before flashing a shot across the face of goal.

Andrew Woodall responded for Selby but his tame effort was comfortably saved by Luke Herriott. His strike partner Louis Blackwell was also guilty of a wayward finish after beating the Emley offside trap.

Crowther made amends for his earlier mistake with an excellent last ditch tackle on Flynn forcing him to shoot wide after a good break down the centre. Meanwhile Emley’s Paul Sykes went close with a couple of headers from corners and a drive from the edge of the box before making a vital challenge of his own to stop Ian Beckram as it looked like the winger had got round him down the left hand side.

Despite having the better of the possession Emley didn’t really seem to up their game until the final stages of the first half, going close with an overhead kick from Kenworthy and low drive by Anthony Haigh that brought a good save from Montgomery.

They finally made the breakthrough on 40 minutes as Levi Maturine unpicked the defence with an excellent ball into the path of Flynn who smashed his shot past Montgomery.

Flynn notched his second of the game just before the half time whistle as Maturine did well to win the ball back, then feed Kenworthy who held off his marker before crossing to Flynn for a simple finish.

Selby created a couple of chances early on in the second half as Emley appeared a little slow out of the blocks. Woodall shot wide from close range and David Heron had a free header which forced a regulation save from Herriott before Emley finally stepped up a gear to put the game out of sight.

Flynn was denied a 10 minute hat trick as Montgomery saved well with his feet, the keeper also made a brilliant save from 25 yard by Aaron Joseph before Emley added their 4th goal.

It was Haigh who scored with crisp first time finish from 25 yards which nestled in the bottom corner giving Montgomery no chance on 55 minutes.

Emley then began to play some excellent free flowing football with Selby unable to offer anything in resistance. Josh Cooke forced a good save from Montgomery with a header from a Kenworthy cross. Soon after Kenworthy was desperately unlucky not to get himself on the scoresheet as he curled the ball onto the crossbar following a sublime chipped throughball by Haigh.

Substitute Josh Ingham was the architect of Emley’s fifth goal delivering a beautifully weighted ball round the back of the defence for Flynn to run onto and slot home on 66 minutes.

Fellow substitute Doran Jordan had a decent effort blocked from literally his first touch of the ball and Cooke curled shot just wide of the post.

Flynn scored his 20th goal of the season and 4th of the night on 81 minutes making the score 6-0. The move started at the back from a clearance by Herriot to Haigh who again set up the striker to run through the middle and place past Montgomery.

He might have had 5th goal soon after following an excellent move involving Brad Riley, Matt Thornton and Jordan but fired over the bar. Haigh could also have had another goal after beating two defenders but saw his effort deflect into the side netting.

Anthony Leech wrapped up the scoring in the final minute of the game with a brilliant diving header from a Sykes cross in to cap another excellent performance in the midfield role that he is currently revelling in.

With due respect to their opponents this was not Emley’s best performance of the season but Darren Hepworth will be delighted by the chances created by his team and the manner in which they put them away. Next up they face a hugely important FA Vase 2nd round clash with league rivals Bottesford at the Welfare Ground on Saturday (3.00pm).
