AFC Emley saw victory slip from their grasp despite coming back from being two goals behind at Westella.

Emley found themselves 2-0 down after 22 minutes but turned it around thanks to a brace from Kieran Ryan and an Alex Hallam strike but Westella turned it around themselves and held on for the victory despite having a man sent off late on.

It was a game which Emley started slowly in and they went behind after just five minutes when Michael Hewitt headed in a corner.
Westella put Emley under a lot of pressure and they doubled their lead when Joe McFadyen’s left foot drive found the top corner when he found himself with time and space Emley’s area.

It had the feel of a frustrating afternoon for Darren Hepworth’s side, particularly when Robbie Graham and Jordan Coduri were both booked. Graham was booked for a foul and Coduri was booked for his involvement when a clutch of players from both sides reacted as emotions began to boil over.

From this point on Emley improved. Kieran Ryan and Ashley Flynn were getting more involved and it was those two who got Emley back into the game when Flynn found Ryan who rounded the keeper and smashed the ball into the net.

The goal opened the game up and both sides could have scored again before the break. Adam Lawlor made a brilliant save, tipping McFadyen’s header over the bar while Danny Ryan almost scored when his sensational free kick from around 35 yards out when just
over the bar.

Emley made the perfect start to the second half when Tommy Brennan’s long ball over the top found Ryan who burst into the box and struck a low shot into the bottom corner to equalise for Emley.

They went ahead just three minutes later. Flynn’s lovely through ball was met by Alex Hallam who was then one on one with the keeper and he coolly slotted the ball home as Emley completed the turnaround within four minutes of the restart.

However they failed to capitalise and conceded straight away when Chris Spinks was able to score with a volley from 20 yards out.
It sparked Westella back into life. Emley were still pressing for the winner but it was Westella who got what turned out to be the winning goal in the 61st minute. McFadyen again found himself with space in Emley’s area and his shot forced a wonderful save from Lawlor but Callum Harrison tapped in the rebound.

From then on it was all Emley as they pushed for an equaliser. Coduri managed to wriggle through the Westella defence and had a shot which was blocked. Emley were claiming a handball but it wasn’t given.

Sam Jerome missed a glorious opportunity as he headed just wide from a corner and soon after Flynn managed to lift the ball over the keeper but his shot was cleared off the line.

Emley were given hope in the last ten minutes when Matthew Fyvie was sent off for a professional foul on Flynn. Flynn was through on goal but was pulled back and brought down just outside the box and the referee had no choice but to send of Fyvie.

Emley continued to force the issue. Ryan picked up the ball inside the box and his shot on the turn was blocked for another corner which was headed just over.

The ball simply wouldn’t go in for Emley and they couldn’t get the equaliser their second half dominance deserved.
