Pewits bag all 3 points in HD derby clash

Emley are top dogs (or birds) in Huddersfield, for now, following a 3-1 win away at rivals Golcar Utd in the NCEL Premier Division clash at Longfield Avenue.

Following last season's 3 draws between the sides (Golcar won the cup game on penalties) it was a welcome relief for the Emley fans to celebrate a victory over their postcode rivals.

Emley were undoubtedly the better side throughout but only sealed the win in the final quarter.

It was a good start for The Pewits, kicking towards the Longfield Avenue end and it wasn't long before Sam Kelly, the former Emley keeper now at Golcar was forced into action to bat away a shot from Iyrwah Gooden on his return from suspension.

The first 10-15 minutes were pretty scruffy but mainly played in Golcar's half, The Weavers unable to make much ground against Emley's stubborn rearguard.

Jerome, Lawrence and Gooden were making nuisances of themselves and a few hefty challenges started to come in, but Emley maintained the upper hand.

Skipper and Man of the Match James Knowles was on hand to meet a corner from the left but his header went wide.

Golcar finally managed an attack of note but Dec Lambton was on hand to palm the shot wide from former Emley striker Danny Naidole, Golcar got the taste of it and a couple of minutes later another promising attack ended with Buddy Cox firing well wide from a good position inside the 6 yard box.

Donae Lawrence and Iyrwah Gooden then combined for Emley but the danger was cleared by the home defence, Lawrence was involved again a few minutes later setting up a chance for Will Norcross who saw his shot saved by Kelly.

But then as it appeared things were winding down for the first half, Emley struck gold , the ball was moved from right to left and back inside to the waiting Joe Kenny who fired an angled shot past the diving Kelly for a crucial half time lead for Emley.

H/T -GOLCAR 0-1 EMLEY

Golcar came out strong for the start of the second half and unfortunately for Emley it would only take a matter of minutes before the hosts equalised, Cox's shot was parried by Lambton but only as far as Naidole who slammed home the leveller.

It was a cruel blow for Emley who hadn't got going in the second half but they soon found their feet again and dragged themselves back into the contest, Gooden was unable to make contact with a fine cross in from Smith on the right, Norcross then had a couple of chances, both were decent shots but saved by the keeper.

Hardaker finally got some joy down the left and after finding a bit of space whipped in a beautiful cross which Kelly had to tip behind for a corner with Jerome waiting to pounce, Jerome would be denied with a shot from the edge of the area as Emley cranked up the pressure.

That pressure finally paid off as Emley were awarded a penalty, recent substitute Walshaw played an important role in winning the penalty but Jerome's spot kick was well saved by Kelly down to his right.

It wasn't to be for Jerome, who bagged his first goal of the season on his Emley return on Tuesday, but he wouldn't have long to wait to redeem himself and bag goal no.2.

Within 2 minutes, Emley regained the lead, after good work in around the area, the ball fell nicely for Ruben Jerome, who calmly stood up the defender before slotting the ball into the bottom corner to the delight of Emley's travelling support down that end.

Jerome almost bagged himself a second a few minutes later but his shot from inside the area went wide.

Emley were now in control of the game and repelling most of Golcar's attacks with Knowles and Cowgill at the back strong and composed, Smith also was on hand with a great defensive header to keep the lead intact.

Emley could now play out a bit and take the game to The Weavers, which they did emphatically to add a third and match winning goal, with Golcar pushing forward, Emley broke, eventually the ball found its way to Joe Clegg, who took his time to rifle in a third into the bottom corner and celebrate with the Emley supporters, there would be no way back for Golcar now.

Emley remained strong and kept Golcar out in the final few minutes to claim a valuable win, their second in succession on the road and their first win in the HD derby to move up to 7th in the league table before a tricky tie away in Liverpool against Lower Breck in the FA Cup on Wednesday.
