Walshaw hat-trick caps 5-star Emley performance

Emley put high flying Campion to the sword with something of a swagger as the Pewits cruised to a 5-0 victory.

It was the second victory in a week over an outfit new to the NCEL Premier Division and another real statement win.

It took 30 minutes for the game to really kick into life with Ruben Jerome tumbling in the box after a coming together with the Campion defender. Nathan Curtis converting the subsequent penalty.

The visitors could, and probably should, have restored parity from the restart but Aidan Kirby’s lob agonisingly hit the bar.

The next incident was a flash point in midfield that saw James Walshaw receive a yellow card for a late challenge. That wasn’t enough for Campion who wanted more. They did get more - but sadly for them, they talked themselves into a sin-bin for their own Kirby.

While the Campion captain sat on the naughty-step for 10 minutes, Emley looked to capitalise on the temporary numerical advantage. And so it came to pass, as a Curtis cross from the left found the head of Jerome. His header wasn’t clean but he was able to pick up the scraps and stab home to make it 2-0.

Campion had the next best chance and it would have made a game of it going into the break if they had been able to capitalise. A rare Emley defensive error gave Patrick Sykes a golden opportunity but he squandered it and shot wide.

The second half got going much quicker with Emley keen to put the game to bed. Although Lambton was required to make an early stop from a mid-range effort it was then all Emley and mostly Walshaw who clinched a hat-trick to add to his midweek brace.

His first and third followed a similar pattern. A good through ball, an excellent first touch and an emphatic finish. But it was Walshaw’s second that stood out. A free-kick on the edge of the box and the experienced striker hit a sweet shot that left the goalkeeper rooted to the spot as the ball dipped over the wall and into the top right corner.

Campion did think they had nabbed a consolation goal in the dying embers but the celebrating sub was denied by the assistant’s flag.

The win edged Emley up into the top half of the table with games in hand remaining over all the sides above them. Next up are two back-to-back away games with a visit to Penistone Church on Wednesday followed by Tadcaster Albion at the weekend.
