Ashley Flynn's magnificent hat-trick books Emley's place in cup quarter-final.

Ashley Flynn’s stunning hat-trick helped AFC Emley through to the quarter finals of the Northern Counties East League Cup in a 4-2 victory at Selby Town on Tuesday evening.

Flynn’s opener was cancelled out by a magnificent looping volley from Calum Ward, but Emley’s top scorer hit back before Matthew Jackson added a third.

Selby found a way back into the game with ten minutes to go through Liam Flanagan but Flynn completed his hat-trick with a luscious lob in the last minute.

Darren Hepworth’s side await the draw for the final eight and will be hoping to avoid long trips to Bridlington Town and AFC Mansfield.

In the meantime, Emley must firmly focus on the league. Their top spot will be under serious threat if they fail to win at 3rd placed Pontefract Collieries on Saturday (3.00pm).

But their confidence took a strong boost on Tuesday after a satisfying win over Selby.

Flynn opened the scoring on 15 minutes, but Emley were pegged back onto level terms when Alex Slack failed to clear his lines, allowing Ward to fire a looping volley over the helpless Graham McLachlan.

Flynn matched Ward’s goal with a beautiful curling effort into the top right corner before Jackson nodded past Selby goalkeeper Alex Ward and tapped into an empty net to make it 3-1.

Selby threatened to cut the deficit to one and managed to do so when Flanagan headed in from the six yard box.

But any worries were swept aside by the reliant Flynn, whose exquisite lob in the last minute booked the visitors’ place in the quarter finals.
