AFC Emley are through to the third round of the Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup after a 4-1 win over Thorpe Hesley, writes Josh Lindley.

Goals from Ashley Flynn, Kieran Ryan, Jordan Coduri and an own goal comfortably put Emley through at the expense of their Rotherham-based opponents.

It was Emley who started the brighter, with Anthony Haigh and Kieran Ryan having efforts saved by Hesley goalkeeper Matt King.

The home side took the lead in the first half, when Haigh tested King from distance, and the travelling keeper could only parry his shot straight into the path of the onrushing Ashley Flynn, who gleefully tucked home his 28th goal of the season.

The lead was doubled before the break, with defender Jack Cooper running down the right hand side, before crossing to Flynn, who headed the ball into the path of Kieran Ryan and he fired a shot beyond Matt King via a slight deflection to give Emley a two goal cushion.

Thorpe Hesley got themselves back in the game early in the second half thanks to a wonder strike from forward Thomas Beech, as his hopeful effort from outside the area somehow found its way into the bottom corner over the head of Adam Lawlor in the Emley goal.

Emley then went in search of a third that would have given them some breathing space, with Flynn hitting both the bar and post with two strikes at goal, and Ryan also thundering an effort against the bar. They did have the ball in the net, only for it to be ruled out for a foul on the Hesley goalkeeper.

The third did eventually come, with substitute Jordan Coduri finishing off a move that once again saw Cooper down the right, he found Ryan in the area and the forward squared it to Coduri, who tucked it home.

Thorpe Hesley then had a disallowed goal of their own, as second half sub Danny Archer fired home after the ball broke to him following a free-kick, only to see the assistant’s flag raised.

Emley added a fourth in injury time, as a nice passing move down the left involving both Flynn and Ryan saw Hesley defender Chris Meakin prod the ball past his own goalkeeper under pressure from Flynn and into the bottom corner of the net, which sealed Emley’s place in the next round.
